Susan's update, March 21, 2010: Margaret Moth, a woman whose courage almost defied belief, died today at the age of 59. While she would not have cried, I sit here with tears streaming down my face for the loss of a woman I never knew, but who deeply impacted me and countless others around the world.

Susan notes: some sources say these events occured on November 14. The exact date is unimportant really. What is vital is to remember that the rights women have today were hard won by brave women in the past.

This is the story of American women who were ground-breakers in the women's movement. These brave women and others from around the globe made all the difference in the lives we live today.

Captain Nichola Kathleen Sarah Goddard, MSM (May 2, 1980 – May 17, 2006) was the first female Canadian combat soldier killed in combat.

She was the 16th Canadian soldier killed in Canadian operations in Afghanistan.

It was the coldest winter ever – so cold that many animals froze to death.

In an effort to save themselves from this icy fate, the porcupines decided to gather together to fend off the chill.

They huddled close to each other, covered and protected from the elements, and warmed by their collective body heat.
